Legendary film maker Steven Spielberg’s on-screen adaptation of Ernest Cline’s science fiction novel, Ready Player One, is set for a spring 2018 release.
The first trailer for the film was released during San Diego Comic-Con, and it is jam packed with Easter eggs. See for yourself:
The book and movie take place in 2049, after the huge increase in population and economic and environmental collapse causes a dystopian world. Characters within this universe can opt to wear incredibly advanced VR headsets to escape into a virtual fantasy world and away from the tragic reality of the outside world.
The in the plot of the story, after the death of the inventor of this virtual world dies, people compete to find hints hidden within the OASIS as to the whereabouts of the creator’s fortune. It’s a sort-of modern update of the Willy Wonka theme. To drive this home, the score of the trailer even includes a rendition of the song “Pure Imagination” from the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
A particularly skilled VR player named Wade, played by Tye Sheridan (“Cyclops” in X-Men: Apocalypse), sets out to find the fortune while competing against other players, some backed by huge corporations.
Here are the Top 10 Easter eggs we found hidden throughout the trailer.
#1 Deathstroke and #2 Harley Quinn
In the virtual world of the OASIS, your avatar can appear to be anyone. These two people appear to have taken the form of Harley Quinn and Deathstroke for their avatars. There has been some debate as to whether this is Deathstroke or Deadpool, but we’re certain this is Deathstroke. With a heavy push on the 80’s nostalgia (the year of Deathstroke’s inception was 1980), and the fact that another DC character appears right beside him, there should be no doubt that Deathstroke is the one featured. The DC characters also are owned by the same studio that is releasing this film.
#3 Iron Giant
The titular character from Brad Bird’s animated 1999 movie, The Iron Giant, makes an appearance. Fans of the character should be ecstatic as Spielberg himself has confirmed that the Iron Giant will have a fairly sizable role within the film. Alongside him you can see another character that resembles Deadpool, though, according to reports, it is actually an character named Shoto, original to the film.
#4 Dr. Emmett Brown’s DeLorean
The DeLorean time machine from the Back to the Future trilogy has rocketed its way back onto the big screen for the first time since 1990. It, too, will have a prominent role in the movie as it is the personal car of Tye Sheridan’s character, Wade. Although we likely won’t see the DeLorean travel through time during Ready Player One. In the trailer, it appears to be competing in a race among other competitors for the key to the fortune.
During the scene with the mad man riding on top of a giant scorpion there appears to be some weaponized ostriches from the 1982 game, Joust. Their role in Ready Player One is unknown, but a fight between a huge mechanical scorpion and some jousting ostriches with light sabers will be entertaining, to say the least.
#6 Freddy Krueger, #7 Halo, and #8 Duke Nukem
This comprises of an orc avatar named Aech, Wade’s best friend, running onto a battlefield and killing other avatars. As many Halo fanatics have pointed out, Aech’s gun is actually the assault rifle from the Halo games. In the scene, Aech first puts a bullet in the avatar of the Springwood Slasher himself (Freddy Krueger), followed by a Duke Nukem avatar.
#9 Lara Croft
In the upper right hand corner of this scene there’s a Lara Croft avatar talking to someone before the big race sequence in New York city. Her role in Ready Player One is likely just an Easter egg cameo, but it is still a fun one nonetheless.
#10 Akira Motorcycle/Atari Reference (Bonus #11)
Wade’s crush in the books is a character named Art3mis. In the film, she will be portrayed by Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel), and we can see in this shot that she is riding a light cycle from the 1988 anime Akira. On the light cycle there are several logo stickers reminiscent of NASCAR sponsors, including an Atari logo, as well as some Hello Kitty stickers.
Ready Player One is schedule to debut in North American theaters during the weekend of March 30, 2018.
